Leadership training at the University of Bern with the option to complete a CAS

The leadership training programme at the University of Bern consists of introductory events, basic modules and the CAS Academic Leadership.

In five leadership events, new executives receive valuable information on the basic principles and objectives of the University of Bern as well as on relevant topics in the areas of human resources, finance and staff performance appraisal. The introductory events are an important part of the onboarding programme for managers at the University of Bern and must be attended in the first year.

The four basic modules form the foundation of leadership training at the University of Bern and are open and free of charge to all executives at the University of Bern. Managers who wish to delve deeper into leadership and management topics can attend four additional elective modules and complete the CAS Academic Leadership with a diploma. Registration takes place via the Centre for University Continuing Education (ZUW).

The first round of basic modules started in autumn 2022 and the participants in the first CAS ‘Academic Leadership’ graduated at the end of 2023. Due to the high demand, the basic modules will be offered in duplicate from 2023.

The university's leadership training programme is continuously evaluated and developed in order to offer managers the best possible support. In addition, additional programmes are examined and new courses offered:

- Introductory event 5 ‘Good teaching and communication’ (spring 2024)

- Forum for managers (autumn 2023)

- ‘Supporting mentally stressed employees for managers’ (February 2024)

Revising the management mission statement and management tools

As part of the leadership culture and change action area, the university's leadership mission statement is to be revised and integrated into leadership training. In addition, the management tools for line managers are to be reviewed and, if necessary, adapted on the basis of the management mission statement.

Managers from all faculties are to be involved in the analyses and further developments so that the mission statement can be adapted to the university as a whole.

The corresponding work will begin as soon as the necessary resources are available.

Professional Change Management

The rapid pace of change in today's world places great demands on the employees of the University of Bern. To ensure that everyone can cope well with change and is well supported in this process, managers are to be trained in professional change management. In 2024, interviews and workshops have been conducted to identify the requirements and develop a suitable programme for managers and employees throughout the university. The CAS ‘Academic Leadership’ also includes an elective module on change management.
