Projects "Conditions of Employment"
Strengthening intermediate staff members
In the last few years, structural reforms have been realised in the employment and working conditions, with the aim of improving the plannability of academic careers and reducing precarious employment situations.
In the next few years, the focus will be on ‘transitions and skills acquisition’, especially at postdoc level, especially on the following areas:
- Expansion of the availability of transferable skills in the area of ‘Application and impact of AI on work as a researcher’
- Providing leadership training for postdocs.
- Mentoring programmes in various forms for all postdocs as far as possible
- Events on non-academic career paths for postdocs
- Regular monitoring of working and mentoring conditions at postdoc level
- Online platform for junior researchers
Financial support from swissuniversities is available for some of the measures in the initial phase. For its part, the Executive Board of the University has laid the foundations for the further development of funding conditions by creating the Academic Careers office in 2024.

Customized, flexible employment conditions
The University of Bern's staff survey has been evaluated with regard to employment conditions. Targeted measures are now being developed on the basis of the analysis.
Healthy university
A health management programme has been established and is now firmly anchored at the university. Workplace health promotion is continued in day-to-day activities. You can find all information on this at Healthy UniBe - Working at the University of Bern
Employer Branding
In order to improve the positioning and to strengthen the employer brand of the University of Bern as well as to make the employment conditions more visible to the public, the topic of employer branding is being pursued as a project. It has been added to the project management portfolio of the Administrative Directorate (VD). The results of the staff survey were analysed with regard to demand-oriented and flexible working conditions. Measures derived from this will be realised and implemented in 2025.
